C.S. Lewis never fails to incorporate the most simple aspects of our life into the deep revelations of our calling hear on earth. In his piece Meditation in a Toolshed Lewis not only manages to encompass our entire world view, but also gives very neat incite to his own life's work and the backbone of much of his writing. As far as his own work is concerned, what made Lewis's writing so intriguing and so enticing to so many readers was his ability to write about Christianity from an outside perspective. Much of the time as Christians we are encased "at" our religion in our daily walk, evangelism, and personal relationship with God. What makes Lewis such a revolutionary author is that he placed himself "along" Christianity and described both his ideas and experiences from both perspectives. I find it quite fascinating and no coincidence that this piece emphasizes the importance of individuals incite into things, not only Christianity, from both an "at" and "around" perspective, just like much of Lewis's work.
Another important aspect of this piece deals specifically with us. Lewis begins the piece by discussing what limiting yourself to just one aspect namely "at" or "around" does to your ability to understand and interpret things in life. What has to be understood is that isolating yourself to one of these perspectives leads directly to ignorance. Now we know that we cannot experience or be "at" every idea or situation, but what is important is that we learn from those who have been in or "at" those ideas or situations. By doing this we shield ourselves from the tempting shallow waters of ignorance and enter into the depths of true understanding. This is how Lewis ends this piece. Once we limit our incite to solely at or along it can also lead us to what Lewis calls rot which is a never ending spiral of idiocy that never comes to a truth about anything.
Although Lewis's Meditaitons in a Toolshed is a short piece, it truly covers alot of ground in regards to understanding Lewis as well as analyzing our own life and christian walk. This blog simply looks along Lewis remarkable piece. To truly understand these things in our life we must be active in them. Perhaps Lewis states it best himself, we don't necessarily know what is true and what is exact fiction, "we just have to find out".
